Biography
Critics and fans often struggle to categorize his sound — labels like fusion, instrumental rock, and progressive jazz all fall short. Julien's music is defined by what he calls "unforgivingly honest" analog tone, fusing soulful sophistication with the raw, unpredictable energy of vintage rock.
He seamlessly channels the fiery expressionism of Jimi Hendrix, the harmonic sophistication of John Scofield, and the emotional power of Jeff Beck. Kasper has integrated such influences into a vocabulary as a composer and improviser that is truly his own.
This synthesis of influences is a deliberate pursuit of authentic expression. "My music is built from the sounds and players that shaped me," he explains.
"One of the most imaginative composers and players working with the guitar today." Vintage Guitar Magazine
For over 20 years, Kasper has been a professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music, where he has become known for his innovative approach to guitar education. He developed three groundbreaking performance labs — Creative Applications, the Jimi Hendrix Lab, and the Jeff Beck Lab — that help students move beyond technical proficiency toward artistic expression. He also teaches Harmonic Considerations in Improvisation and Recital Workshop for Performance Majors in the Performance Division.
"As a teacher, my greatest desire is to inspire students by example to embark on the quest to find their own artistic voices. I love exposing my students to the nuance and emotion in music that is important to me so that they, in turn, learn to hear and feel more deeply what is important to them." Julien Kasper
His teaching is deeply informed by his extensive professional experience across multiple styles and contexts — from "dive bars in the deep South to great jazz festivals in Europe, and all points in between." Notable students include Clay Cook of the Zac Brown Band, Italian guitarist Andrea Balestra, and bebop virtuoso Cecil Alexander. Kasper takes particular pride in "the students with whom I establish a lifetime mentoring relationship."
Born in France in 1962 to American parents, Kasper grew up as an "army child" moving around the American South. Inspired by Bob Dylan and the Beatles, he picked up the guitar at age eight. By sixteen, while living in Tallahassee, Florida, he was already touring with the blues-rock band Crosscut Saw alongside harmonica virtuoso Pat Ramsey.
Seeking a more challenging musical environment, Kasper moved to Austin, Texas, where he spent four years gigging and honing his skill among the city's heavy hitting players. Frustrated by Austin's limited jazz scene, he accepted a scholarship to the University of Miami's jazz program, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Jazz and Studio Performance. While at UM, he played with IKO IKO, the house band at Miami's legendary Tobacco Road, sharing stages with blues legends and developing his ability to integrate advanced harmonic concepts into his blues-rock foundation.
A jazz guitar fellowship brought Kasper to the University of North Texas, where he completed his Master's degree in Jazz Studies in 1992. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he continued expanding his musical palette, working in country, blues, rock, and jazz contexts, and forming an early version of the Julien Kasper Band with drummer Keith Carlock (who would go on to work with Steely Dan, Sting, and Wayne Krantz).
The international jazz and blues community first became aware of Kasper through his work with pianist and Hammond B-3 organist Bruce Katz. Their extensive tours throughout the United States and Europe, along with two acclaimed albums on Audioquest — Mississippi Moan and Three Feet off the Ground — established Kasper as a guitarist capable of moving seamlessly between blues intensity and jazz sophistication.
Kasper has also recorded with blues legend Mighty Sam McClain on the albums Journey and Soul Survivor, bringing his distinctive guitar voice to McClain's powerful vocal performances. His sideman and session work has given him experience across a remarkably wide stylistic range, all of which feeds into his work as a bandleader.
As a leader, Kasper has released four studio albums: Flipping Time (2003), The New Imperial (2006), Trance Groove (featuring T Lavitz of Dixie Dregs and Widespread Panic on Hammond B3), and his self-titled 2023 release, plus a 2024 live album recorded at Boston Harbor Distillery. Each album has showcased his evolution as a composer and his commitment to organic, live-in-the-studio recording.
"Kasper displays righteous control, dead-on phrasing, progressive composition, and savvy ears... This guy is really, really good." Guitar Player Magazine
Kasper's guitar tone is a crucial element of his musical identity. While he doesn't consider himself a "gear-head or vintage snob," he has found that vintage equipment helps him realize "the tones in my mind's ear." His main guitar is a hybrid Stratocaster with a 1954 neck on a 1957 body, though he also uses a 1963 SG Special, a 1966 Stratocaster, and a D'Pergo Signature Limited Strat.
His amplification typically includes vintage Marshall heads (1972 Super Lead, 1968 tremolo 50 watt, 1969 50 watt) and Voxes — an AC10 and an AC30 — often with a Fuzz Face pedal to create his signature psychedelic textures.
This commitment to analog warmth extends to his recording approach. Kasper has consistently chosen to record live in the studio to analog tape, avoiding excessive digital editing in favor of capturing genuine performances.
Based in the Boston area, Kasper is an avid all-season surfer who draws parallels between riding waves and musical improvisation.
"Surfing brings me into elemental contact with nature. Riding a wave is interaction with pure energy and the closest thing I can find to musical improvisation in that technique, knowledge, and experience all are at play but, ultimately, one must improvise and react to the purity of each passing moment." Julien Kasper
"Kasper has successfully bridged divergent musical concepts... His soulful expressionism brings a fiery edge to the mix. Multiple listens reveal that every note has a purpose and every change furthers the storytelling mastery."

"His tone is unique, his talent for melody is phenomenal and his band tighter than most working groups today... Kasper gives us a sound we can't help but listen to."
— Jazzreview.com
"A guitar virtuoso whose instrumental excursions find equal footing in both jazz and blues without being bound to either. Kasper wields a master's touch even as he alternates between blazing workouts, sinewy grooves and introspective musings."
